Naming and Addressing of Objects Without Unique Identifiers

چکیده
This paper proposes the hierarchical naming scheme, which is a way of naming and addressing suitable for large-scale distributed systems. FIrst, assumptions of the systems are provided, and features required for naming in the systems are discussed. Then, the methods for giving location-independent IDs and addresses representing objects' location are proposed. Our scheme constructs global IDs and addresses from locally unique ones. They have relative representations, which are translated if they are transmitted among naming contexts. This ensures uniqueness of IDs while e ciency and availability are preserved. Next the paper introduces methods which make our scheme suitable for mobile naming contexts and dynamic recon guration of networks and systems. Implementation issues of our method and their solutions are also presented.

The Anonymous Consensus Hierarchy and Naming Problems
This paper investigates whether the assumption of unique identifiers is essential for wait-free distributed computing using shared objects of various types. Algorithms where all processes are programmed identically and do not use unique identifiers are called anonymous. A variety of results are given about the anonymous solvability of two key problems, consensus and naming, in systems of variou...
متن کاملRandom, Ephemeral Transaction Identifiers in Dynamic Sensor Networks
Recent advances in miniaturization and low-cost, low-power design have led to active research in large-scale, highly distributed systems of small, wireless, low-power, unattended sensors and actuators. We explore the use of Random, Ephemeral TRansaction Identifiers (RETRI) in such systems, and contrast it with the typical design philosophy of using static identifiers in roles such as node addre...
متن کاملNaming: Design Pattern and Framework
Naming is an important, but frequently overlooked, aspect of software systems. Usually, naming appears combined with other issues, e.g. distributed communication technology. This paper treats naming in isolation. It presents a naming design pattern which abstracts several naming policies and an object-oriented framework that can be customized to support naming policies. Applications designer ca...
متن کاملImproving on Version Stamps
Optimistic distributed systems often rely on version vectors or their variants in order to track updates on replicated objects. Some of these mechanisms rely on some form of global configuration or distributed naming protocol in order to assign unique identifiers to each replica. These approaches are incompatible with replica creation under arbitrary partitions, a typical operation mode in mobi...
متن کاملEfficient Data Delivery over Address-Free Wireless Sensor Networks
Addressing plays a vital role in traditional packet networks but it introduces too much overhead, wasting precious resources, for data-centric and resource-constrained wireless sensor networks. As a result, it is desirable to design networks that are without the addressing function, termed as addressfree wireless sensor networks. However, current data delivery mechanisms proposed for wireless s...
